Our relationship with the German youth was interesting. Since I was seven or eight years old, I have had a really close German friend. This friend suddenly ended our relationship because he joined the Hitler Youth, like almost all young Germans. They thought themselves superior, walked around in German uniforms, sang German marches, and despised everyone. Their relationships with the Jews were broken, and their relationships with the others worsened. Among them, there were still some young Germans who behaved as if nothing had changed: they met us, spent with us days and days in the summer, playing with us in various inner courtyards, but not in public, so as not to be seen by others.
